I had a Budgie named Smokey Joe (he was named after a boxer). Smokey was a cool bird! It took me several minutes for several weeks to teach him how to wave hello. I'm sure my friends thought I was a fool for sitting on my desk chair holding a paper towel roll to look like a perch. I would pick up one hand and wave hello (I'd say "hello" too). It didn't take that long. When anyone walked into the room he would pick up one foot and wave and say "hello" in his bird-like voice. He also learned other words. He used to land on my head or shoulder and he'd chirp happily and kiss me (or lick the salt off my face). He used to drive my poor dog crazy. He would call out, "Ragmop" when he was flying around my room. My dog would look up at me and whine. He lived for four years. He did not seem sick, but he might have gotten sick from the wall paper paste. I didn't realize he was nibbling so much around the window frame in my room. One morning I slept in and I was surprised when I woke up the Smokey wasn't chirping away. When I took the towel off his cage he was leaning against the side upside down (he had a huge cage - tripple the normal size). I screamed so loud when I realized he was dead that my mother thought that something was wrong with one of my brothers. That was a sad day for me. He was a happy bird though. I used to give him presents for Christmas and any other holiday.
